Océ Documents Environmental Leadership with Latest Sustainability Report

June 2, 2008 – Trumbull, CT– Océ announced today that it continues its leadership in environmental sustainability with the release of its 2007 Sustainability Report. The report documents Océ achievements in delivering sustainable technology and environmentally sound policies. The 2007 Sustainability Report explains Océ use and re-use of components, energy and water consumption, waste handling and emissions, as well as human and environmental safety.
“We are proud to share our 2007 Sustainability Report with the marketplace and demonstrate our commitment to the environment. Océ maximizes reuse of materials and minimizes emissions of ozone, dust and toner to help customers print in the most productive way possible and reduce energy consumption per print,” said Joseph Skrzypczak, President and CEO, Océ North America, Inc. “Our development programs look at environmental impact across the entire product cycle, from product development, manufacturing, use and reuse through to the processing of waste and residual materials.”

Océ pursues sustainable approaches across many areas. A number of Océ products comply with the stringent criteria set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's ENERGY STAR® program, which promotes energy efficiency and economical use of paper in office equipment to reduce combustion-related air pollution. Océ re-manufacturing programs continue to expand the use of recyclable materials, so only a fraction of Océ equipment ends up as landfill, where it can then be disposed of in a controlled manner.
Customers who are concerned with environmental issues have acknowledged Océ’s efforts. “Océ has been recognized for its social and environmental responsibility by a number of international organizations, and we appreciate that this commitment has been carried through products like the Océ JetStream™ system,” noted Don McKenzie, CEO of Océ customer Direct Group. Océ was also one of the first companies to be RoHS compliant, implementing the standard across its product line, from the Océ VarioPrint® cut sheet systems to Océ VarioStream® continuous form systems.
With the Océ VarioPrint 6250 printer and its Océ Gemini Instant Duplex technology, Océ provides industry leadership in the economic use of paper toner and energy. This print system uses paper, toner and energy more economically, thanks to its double-sided print technology and efficient single-pass operation.
“A huge thing was the environmental aspect of the Océ VarioPrint 6160 system. The machine creates no toner waste and has much lower emissions. That was definitely a deciding factor,” said June Lapland, operator of the in-house duplication/distribution center at Kellogg Community College.
Members of the Océ VarioPrint multifunction family have been awarded Blue Angel certification for meeting strict requirements on emissions of dust, heat, ozone and noise. No carcinogenic, mutagenic or reprotoxic substances may be added to the plastics used in casing and toners. Maximum emission levels for volatile organic compounds, ozone and dust may not be exceeded. Noise production may not exceed 75 dB(A). Océ VarioPrint systems using Océ CopyPress technology produce virtually no ozone emissions, and their photoconductors contain no toxic elements.
The Océ wide format product lines also offer many examples of a commitment to sustainability. Océ wide format systems have extremely low energy consumption, lower ozone and heat emissions, and support recycled paper. The popular Océ TDS700, Océ TDS600, Océ TDS450 and Océ TDS320 engines are based on unique, patented Océ Eco Design technology. The average maximum ozone emission for Eco Design printers is about one-tenth those of conventional printing technologies. Users don’t need to worry about ozone emissions, which can cause headaches, sore throats or respiratory problems. No warm-up time is needed, so engines start printing immediately. After printing, the systems go into stand-by mode, drastically reducing energy usage and heat generation.
“HGA Architects and Engineers has a long history of environmentally sensitive design, and it has been a core value for us long before sustainability became a hot topic. We are pleased to be partnered with a print equipment vendor who shares similar core beliefs. Océ's TDS and TCS printers align well with our green operations objectives,” said HGA Vice President Patrick Thibaudeau.
