Nashua, N.H., February 16, 2009 – A new white paper from eCopy, Inc. examines the critical considerations for the U.S. Department of Defense in ensuring the multifunction peripherals (MFPs) and copiers it deploys comply with Homeland Security Presidential Directive-12 (HSPD-12).
The white paper provides a checklist of security level and platform questions to use when assessing Common Access Card (CAC) products. In reviewing security considerations, the paper addresses questions related to managing device, file, network and user security. To access the white paper, please click here.
The white paper also looks at how to gauge platform flexibility to maintain and adapt to changing security and compliance requirements. Among the issues examined are does the CAC implementation utilize non-proprietary technologies that satisfy Defense Department requirements and can it facilitate other compliance mandates, such as HIPAA and Sarbanes-Oxley.
HSPD-12 specifies all U.S. government employees must use a common identification standard to access physical facilities and information on classified and unclassified networks, as well as network peripherals such as MFPs. That standard is the CAC used within a public key infrastructure, a system originally developed for the Defense Department.
Based on HSPD-12, office equipment manufacturers and software developers have created MFP CAC authentication products. The white paper can help government employees to understand all elements of the specification so CAC products deployed meet the level of security that is intended in HSPD-12.
eCopy provides a CAC-enabled eCopy ScanStation™, which includes eCopy ShareScan® document imaging software running as a Windows application on the Microsoft operating system that adheres to the strictest CAC security requirements. eCopy’s CAC implementation is platform-independent so users can be authenticated at any compatible MFP equipped with eCopy’s CAC-enabled eCopy ScanStation.
