Canon U.S.A. Showcases Total Imaging and Workflow Management Solutions at Vision Expo East

NEW YORK, March 18, 2010 – Canon U.S.A, Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, will demonstrate the benefits of using its total digital imaging and workflow management solutions, including the CX-1 Hybrid Digital Mydriatic/Non-Mydriatic Retinal Camera1, during Vision Expo East, March 19th – 21st, at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York (booth # MS1050).

The CX-1 is the Company's first fully hybrid digital retinal camera with both mydriatic and non-mydriatic modes. With one touch, the operator can automatically switch between mydriatic and non-mydriatic modes, effortlessly utilizing different functions within seconds and performing several concurrent ocular tests.

The Canon CX-1 Hybrid Digital Mydriatic/Non-Mydriatic Retinal Camera allows the user to take one-shot FAF (Fundus Autofluorescence) photography in a standard configuration, for both mydriatic and non-mydriatic modes. Fundus autofluorescence, or FAF, is the occurrence of autofluorescence in macular waste, particularly Lipofuscin. Examinations that check and monitor autofluorescent waste material are a key step in AMD detection. Using the non-mydriatic mode not only saves time and resources, it also can make the diagnostic procedure more comfortable for the patient.

"Canon continues to provide ophthalmic professionals with the latest digital imaging technology, helping them to provide comprehensive, high-end care to their patients," said Tsuneo Imai, senior director and general manager, Medical Systems Division, Canon U.S.A. "At Vision Expo East, Canon will demonstrate how our full line of digital imaging solutions for the ophthalmic world can play a significant role in improving the efficiency of eye care exams and the management of patient data and images."

Canon's EOS camera technology, with its renowned image processing capabilities, is adapted exclusively for medical use in the CX-1, providing 15.- megapixel resolution. The CX-1 is capable of delivering clear and detailed diagnostic images for virtually immediate review. The single onboard digital camera handles five different photography modes with ease, including non-mydriatic FAF, Color, Red-free, Cobalt and Fluorescein angiography photography.

The Retinal Imaging Control Software that comes with the CX-1 puts tools for comprehensive study management, image capture controls and easy viewing at the user's fingertips. The intuitive graphical interface is simple and straightforward to use. The PC-based software provides quick input and access to all information and images required to assist in patient diagnosis, and data can be easily saved to various external media.

Integrating Digital Imaging Technology and Workflow Management for the Ophthalmic World

Canon markets a full line of digital imaging solutions for the ophthalmic world, including Non-Mydriatic and Mydriatic Retinal cameras, and full auto-tonometer and full auto-ref keratometers, all of which will be on display at the show. In addition to the CX-1, the Canon product line includes:

  • CR-1 Mark II Digital Non-Mydriatic Retinal Camera reduces brightness, helps improve overall patient comfort and significantly shortens exams. When attached to a Canon EOS Digital SLR Camera (sold separately), the CR-1 Mark II is capable of delivering clear and detailed diagnostic images for virtually immediate review. The low flash intensity of the CR-1 Mark II minimizes miosis, thus shortening the time required for taking multiple pictures. The Retinal Imaging Control Software includes a range of tools that enable the user to analyze images immediately after they are captured. Once the images are stored, they can be quickly reviewed, analyzed, printed, stored, exported and digitally communicated.

  • imageSPECTRUM Image Management Software (Version 4.1) is the Canon imaging software for eyecare professionals, designed for use with Canon digital retinal cameras. Available for use with Windows XP and Windows Vista operating systems, imageSPECTRUM Image Management Software delivers capabilities that can enhance patient care, including intelligent, efficient management of images with the reliability of the Canon brand. The easy-to-use interface can be used as a standalone workstation or as part of network station.

  • RK-F1 Full Auto Ref-Keratometer simplifies the standard measurement procedure in just one step. With a press of the Start button, the RK-F1 automatically completes the entire series of steps for both eyes: alignment, measurement and printout.

  • TX-F Full Auto Tonometer is very easy to operate using the full auto mode; once the eye is located on the alignment screen, just press start. The motorized optical head automatically aligns, acquires the readings and then automatically moves over to the opposite eye to perform the same function.

  • OPTOPOL Technology S.A. SPOCT-HR2 provides ultra-high resolution which can help give the doctor more comfort in diagnosis. Optical Coherence Tomography ultra-high scanning speeds shorten data collecting times and helps to improve comfort of examination for patient and operator. The SPOCT-HR has three micron axial resolution which, when combined with advanced analysis algorithm, makes SPOCT-HR state-of-the art in SPOCT technology.

  • OPTOPOL Technology S.A. PTS 1000 automated perimeter is a diagnostic instrument that offers precise and fast testing of the field of vision. The silent performing PTS 1000 features static and kinetic stimuli with all Goldmann stimuli sizes and all stimuli colors used in perimetry. Auto-detection of the eye position may be monitored with the built-in video monitor. Wide range of strategies and analysis tools combined with intuitive interface give the user powerful diagnostic tool, whose handling they will enjoy. Built-in maps and the possibility of creating one's own give a chance to examine only necessary areas. Along with the predefined templates, the advanced printout manager allows custom layouts to be created and saved.

  • PIXMA iP4700 Photo Printer delivers high image-quality with up to 9600x2400 color dpi3, utilizing five ink tanks. The high image-quality is useful for printing retinal images taken with Canon digital retinal cameras.
